Suburban Jungle is a Michigan-based rescue for exotic and domestic pets. The main focus is to rehome animals in need of a change in circumstances, whether it be from neglect and abuse or even from loving homes with a change in situation or finances. The importance is placed on finding a new environment, where the animal's needs will be accomodated with love and enthusiasm. All adoptees have the option of returning the adopted pet, should their circumstances change. There will be some rescued animals, who will not be adopted out and will live the remainder of their lives here, due to their disabilites or their unsuitability as pets. I have over 30 years of experience keeping, breeding and rescuing a wide variety of pets, with a primary focus on reptiles and amphibians.
An importance is placed on education and, in addition to rescues, Suburban Jungle also has worked with schools and local events nurturing children's connection with animals and the world around them. I think a lot of rescue situations can be avoided by educating hobbyists(both new AND old) and doing a better job matching people with an animal that fits their abilities, expectations and lifestyle. I volunteer time with local shelters and rescue events. I also maintain a state permit to take-in protected, native Michigan reptiles from rescue situations.
All animals have a home here until the right match is found, even if it takes years. If you have a reptile that you can no longer accomodate, please feel free to e-mail me. If I have the space I might be able to help and if I don't have space, I might be able to connect you with another rescue that does. All operational costs are currently paid out-of-pocket. Any adoption fees, monetary support or merchandise sales go towards supplies, food and the additional costs of maintaining the animals.
